Molloy enlisted in the U.S. Army from around March 19, 2019, to April 24, 2019, according to the criminal complaint. A month before his enlistment in February, Molloy changed his PayPal email address to “glassofjuice88,” which was a homophone for “Gas the Jews,” with “88” being a code for “Heil Hitler,” as the letter H is the eighth number in the alphabet.
Molloy contracted on Sept 1, 202, as a cadet with the U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) in Chicago at the University of Illinois, according to the criminal complaint. Molloy is reportedly not a part of the ROTC anymore.
In February 2024, Molloy allegedly converted to Islam, following the Shiite sect of the religion, according to the criminal complaint. On Aug. 9, 2024, Molloy reportedly took a plane from Chicago to Istanbul, Turkey, and got to Lebanon the next day on Aug. 10, 2024.
While in Lebanon, Molloy reportedly rented living spaces in Forn El Chebbek and Beirut, Lebanon, which is close to the headquarters of the foreign terrorist organization Hizballah, according to the criminal complaint. Molloy allegedly spoke to several people during his trip to express his desire to fight for Hizballah, even searching “Hezballah training” on Google on Aug. 31, 2024.
An unnamed woman reportedly sent Molloy a voice message on Sept. 13, 2024, advising him to go to mosques where he could meet and speak to Hizballah members, according to the criminal complaint.
On Sept. 18, 2024, the woman allegedly advised Molloy to learn Arabic. She informed him that he might have to stay in Lebanon for two years before the Hizballah members accepted him into the group, according to the criminal complaint. The same day, Molloy’s social media “story” was allegedly removed for promoting “dangerous” organizations.
Molloy reportedly continued to try to join Hizballah, speaking with an unnamed male who tried to explain to him that it would be challenging for him to join Hizballah because of his Irish appearance, according to the criminal complaint. The man reportedly also claimed that Hizballah wasn’t letting anyone in because it was a difficult time for them.
Molloy used Google Translate to speak with his contacts, telling them about his military background and desire to fight for them.
After a series of messages, a male contact allegedly advised Molloy on Oct. 3, 2024, to look into joining the Mukawama “Resistance” in Syria and reiterated that Hizballah wasn’t recruiting, according to the criminal complaint. Molloy reportedly traveled to Syria on Oct 9, 2024, then to Iraq on Oct. 14, 2024, back to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 20, 2024, and finally to Pittsburg the same day.
Molloy is being charged with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to Hizballah and two counts of making false statements to the FBI when they questioned him, according to his Indictment. He faces 38 years in prison if convicted, according to the DOJ press release.
