Authorities say William Carl Jackson of Sacramento, Calif., is responsible for a string of mail thefts and robbing two postal workers.
Jackson was charged with two counts of armed robbery of a postal carrier, as well as two counts of the possession of mail keys.
If Jackson is convicted of armed robbery, he could get up to 25 years for each count, according to his DOJ press release. He also faces 10 years for each count of mail key possession and could be ordered to pay a $250,000 fine for each federal count.
Police in Sacramento, Calif., had been investigating a string of thefts in the area for over half a year, with residents claiming to have had medication and other items stolen from them, according to reporting by FOX40 News on Nov. 4. The Office of the Inspector General got involved a week before the Nov. 4 reporting, making unannounced visits to the postal services in the area to see what they were doing to investigate and alleviate the issue.
The U.S. Postal Service Inspector, Mathew Norfleet, spoke with FOX40 about the issue and claimed that they were investigating several instances where postal carriers had been robbed, often at gunpoint, and their keys were taken from them. FOX40 reporting went on to say that the postal workers who were targeted had been followed beforehand.
Jackson is accused of robbing two postal workers, according to his Oct. 17 indictment. The first incident was on July 11, when Jackson allegedly assaulted a postal worker delivering mail on their route. Jackson reportedly used a black and tan pistol to rob the worker and take their mail keys before fleeing the scene on his bicycle, according to the DOJ press release.
Jackson allegedly robbed another postal worker in the same way on July 31, according to the indictment. In both robberies, Jackson reportedly took possession of the U.S. mail lock and key, which prosecutors claim he intended to either use, sell, or dispose of in violation of Title 18, U.S. Code, Sections 2114 and 1704.
Mail theft has, unfortunately, become more common lately, with cases across the United States getting attention. These cases include the one covered by The Daily Muck of two men, Kenshaun Thompson, 26, from Springfield, Va., who was convicted on Aug. 15 of receiving and possessing stolen mail, and Adam Bekele, 33, from Annandale, Va., who pled guilty on Feb. 22 to conspiracy to commit mail theft.
Bekele was spotted on camera accessing mailboxes with a master key called an “arrow key” used to open many different mailboxes, according to the affidavit. Once Bekele stole the mail for the mailboxes, he delivered them to Thompson in a Falls Church, Va., apartment.
Bekele could face a max of five years in prison, while Thompson could face up to 15 years in prison for his crimes, according to the DOJ press release.
