Mohamed Diara from Wilmington, Del., pleaded guilty to his role in an international sextortion ring that stretched all the way to Cote d’Ivoire.
However, with technology development, also come people who use it for evil purposes with tragic consequences.
One of those was Mohamed Diarra, a 33-year-old man from Wilmington, Del. Diarra pleaded guilty on Jan. 7 for his role in widespread international sextortion, along with a money laundering scheme, according to a Justice Department press release.
With co-conspirators in Cote d’Ivoire, Diarra had had multiple roles in this conspiracy, according to charging documents.
Diarra pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, for which he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. Sentencing is yet to be scheduled.
Authorities said that Diarra served as a so-called “money mule,” receiving extorted funds from victims in the United States and then transferring them to his co-conspirators in Cote d’Ivoire, using bank accounts he owned and controlled, like CashApp, Zelle, Venmo and Apple Pay. He would withdraw the funds as soon as possible to avoid detection or possible account suspension.
Diarra also recruited other people to act as money mules and organized them, gave them directions and served as their guide.
Jordan DeMay, a 17-year-old boy from Michigan, committed suicide after an online chat led to him sending nude photos that were later used by two Nigerian brothers to extort money from him.
Samuel and Samson Ogoshi were sentenced to 210 months behind bars, but sextortion remains one of the biggest problems modern society has to deal with.

Federal authorities also called everyone who fears themselves or someone they know is being sextorted to contact the local FBI field office by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or report it online at the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
