Republicans and Democrats alike celebrated the news, as McConnell has been at odds with Republican top dog Donald Trump in recent years, as well as having several freezing moments while speaking that have led to questions on his mental fitness for duty.
Representative Pelosi (D-CA), like McConnell, is in her 80s now and has been in Congress for nearly 40 years. Pelosi was the top Democrat in the House of Representatives for 20 of those years. In 2023, after 20 years, she passed the leadership torch to Representative Hakeem Jefferies (D-NY).
McConnell and Pelosi (and President Joe Biden, for that matter) are glaring examples of why we need term limits. In a country where the retirement age is 62, the average age of a U.S. Senator in 2023 was 65. More than half (53) of the Senators in 2023 were over the age of 65.
Pelosi, unlike McConnell, has announced that despite her advanced age, she will seek reelection in 2024.
