One of those cases happened in Dallas, Texas, where a police sergeant was indicted on Jan. 27 under federal gun charges after he apparently stole service weapons and sold them, according to a Justice Department press release.
The officer in question was Thomas Michael Fry, 52, and he was indicted on three federal counts of possession and sale of a stolen firearm. Fry has also been charged by the State of Texas with three counts of theft of a firearm.
If convicted of the federal charges, he faces up to 30 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors say at least three 9mm Sig Sauer guns were removed from the Dallas Police Department substation and were later pawned in a pawn shop in Oklahoma.
It all started in August 2021, when the first gun was stolen, and lasted until July 2022. This led to an investigation by the police department hat started on Oct.10, 2022, when it was discovered that the firearms were missing.
One and a half years later, in April 2024, Fry turned himself into the Mesquite Police Department on three counts of theft of a firearm, which are classified as a state jail felony. Although he managed to get out of jail that time, only three months later, in July 2024 Fry was arrested for the second time, this time by the Royse City Police Department, on a felony theft charge.
All of this led to his resignation in August 2024 while on administrative leave during an internal affairs inquiry.
Chad Meacham, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, excoriated Fry for committing his alleged crimes.
“Police officers have a sacred duty to uphold the rule of law. Instead, this sergeant betrayed his department – and his community – by allegedly pawning stolen firearms,” Meacham said.
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office will not hesitate to pursue charges against law enforcement officers who fail to live up to their oaths.”
