The Republican candidate most recently lost the Republican primary election in her own state of South Carolina by double digits to former President Donald Trump. This begs the question, when will Nikki Haley drop out of the election? What is she running for at this point?
Nikki Haley (R-SC) was the first female governor in South Carolina and has most recently served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. Haley was appointed to that position by then-President Trump. Upon that appointment, she became the first Indian-American to hold a cabinet position in US history.
Haley announced her bid for US President a full year ago, in February of 2023. At the time she made the announcement, she was the first candidate to announce a challenge to frontrunner Donald Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination. Now, just one year later, she is the only remaining Republican candidate besides Trump.
Haley has not fared well in the primaries and caucuses thus far. Famously, she lost by 30 points to “None of the Above” in the Nevada primary early this year. In fact, Haley has only won one primary contest so far, the Washington D.C. contest. She was awarded 19 delegates for that victory.
It’s likely that Haley’s plan is to hang on until the Super Tuesday primary on March 5th, when 15 states hold their primaries, the most on any one day of the election cycle. Trump, however, is predicted to dominate the day, which means Super Tuesday could be the end of the road for Haley for President.
