There is a Shift Happening in the Republican Party

Non-Intervention

Republicans were once known as warhawks, and there are still several Republican politicians that fall into this category. They are usually financially backed by large defense contractors who make billions in profits when America is at war. But the average Republican voter is tired of sending our young men and women to dangerous places around the world. The younger generation of Republicans feel that we should have a strong military to deter attacks on our shore and to support our allies, but not to be a global police force.

Shifting Social Policy

Abortion still tops the list of social issues for Republicans, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade was a historic victory for the unborn. But over the past 15 years or so there has been a significant shift in Republican sentiment on many other social issues. Most Republicans have accepted the fact that gay marriage is no longer an issue worth fighting. In fact, most of the younger generation of Republicans are supportive of gay marriage. This can be seen in the rise of gay Republican advocacy groups such as the Log Cabin Republicans. There will always be a Christian fundamentalist segment of the Republican party that opposes gay marriage. But by and large the party has accepted that it’s no longer a political issue and has moved on.

Decriminalization of marijuana is another issue that has gained widespread Republican support in recent years, mostly from the more libertarian segment of the party. Again, the split can be seen along generational lines, with younger Republican voters supporting the legalization of recreational marijuana use, while the older generation is still caught up in the 1980s “War on Drugs”.

Constitutional Focus

It feels like the average Republican voter today is much more focused on the Constitution than even 10 or 15 years ago. I think one reason is that Democrats have continually tried to push the boundaries of the Constitution with their proposed laws recently. The catalyst for this seems to be the passage of Obamacare. When people started being fined for not purchasing a product, I think it really opened people’s eyes to the Constitution. This might be my own personal bias since that’s when I started paying closer attention.

Youth Movement/Push for Term Limits

If there was one Constitutional amendment that would get near universal support, I think it would be term limits. This is a subject that should get bipartisan support. Today we have a Senate where the AVERAGE age of a Senator is 65. We have more octogenarians in public office than ever before. Mitch McConnell and Joe Biden are two perfect examples of exactly why we need term limits. When either of them speak in front of a camera, you can barely understand what they are saying. At an age when most people are considering moving into assisted living, these two are running a country.
