Enter Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy was a political outsider before announcing that he would run for president in 2024, just as Trump was in 2016.
Trump’s name was already well known before he stepped into politics, however, whereas Ramaswamy was relatively unknown. So who is Vivek Ramaswamy?
Vivek (he says it’s pronounced like cake) Ramaswamy was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Indian immigrant parents. He went to public school through eighth grade, then started attending St. Xavier High School, a Jesuit Catholic private school. He graduated from St. Xavier in 2003 as valedictorian.
After high school, Vivek attended Harvard University. He was an outspoken libertarian and the President of the Harvard Political Union.
While attending Harvard, Vivek began to intern at hedge funds and dabble in biotech. In 2007 he co-founded Campus Venture Network, a social networking site for students who hoped to launch businesses. The venture was sold to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in 2009.
Vivek graduated from Harvard summa cum laude in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. After college he was active in the areas of finance, pharmaceuticals, and biotech.
In 2011, Vivek received a Fellowship from the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans to attend Yale Law School. He has said that through his work in biotech and finance, he was already a millionaire before entering Yale.
While at Yale, Vivek would meet fellow Ohioan and future U.S. Senator J.D. Vance. Vivek graduated from Yale with a Juris Doctor in 2013.
After Yale, Vivek founded Roivant Sciences, a pharmaceutical company that purchased drug patents from larger pharmaceutical companies that had not yet been developed and worked to develop them.
In 2015, Ramaswamy sold a large portion of his shares of the company to an investment group and walked away with capital gains of more than $37 million. He remained involved with the management of the company until 2023 when he announced his presidential campaign.
During his campaign, Ramaswamy was critical of other candidates, but often avoided directly criticizing former President Trump. During his 11-month presidential campaign, he often touted himself as “Ultra-MAGA” and wanted to continue the policies of Trump.
Shortly after Trump claimed victories in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries, Ramaswamy dropped out of the race. The following Saturday he was spotted entering a gala with Donald and Melania Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Trump praised Ramaswamy as “young and smart, you don’t get sharper than this.”
Since that dinner, rumors have swirled that Ramaswamy would be an ideal running mate for Trump. South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott has also been named as a front runner for the VP position.
It’s likely that Vivek knew he had no shot at becoming president, but campaigned with the intention of gaining national recognition. Showing loyalty to Trump in the hopes of securing a position in the Trump administration after the 2024 election is not a bad strategy.
